Packing Tips for Moving House

Share Post

Packing is undoubtedly one of the greatest headaches associated with moving. However, there are steps you can follow which will help you move easily and smoothly to your new home. Professional moving boxes and cartons as well as good quality packing material can be bought online as well as from a moving company. You can also get the cartons and boxes free from the nearest grocery store. Use high-quality packing materials for delicate items and box up rest of the goods and your prized possessions safely before hitting the road to your new home.

Make a list

Start by making a list of household items that need packing and shifting. Create a computer printed list stating the contents, with the number of items in front of each label. When packing, place a number on every box and the same number on the list, just in front of the contents that have been packed in that box. When describing the contents, be specific, for example “XYZ files” is better than “files” and “Tulip dishes” is better than “kitchen stuff”.

Have plenty of supplies

You will need plenty of boxes, cartons and packing material since you are packing to move your entire house, not just a few items. You can always return unused boxes to the packing company, and get refunded. You should have about 10 to 12 cartons set aside to use for last minute items on moving day. These include bedding, clothing and a few kitchen and cleaning supplies. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to keep your household goods from being scratched up during shifting, but avoid using newspapers because they can stain your items.

Take extra care of fragile items

Use extra sturdy, corrugated double-walled cartons for fragile items such as china dishes, crystal and glassware. Wrap the breakable items individually in plenty of bubble wrap before placing them in the cartons. Make sure the carton is also lined with bubble wrap.

Consider plastic crates

Plastic packing crates also make a great, cost-effective option for packing household items when shifting. These crates are not only robust and easy to move, but are also safe to stack and store for reuse. You can buy plastic packing crates from specialist suppliers. Some packing companies also rent out these crates on a weekly basis.

Keep important papers with you

Important papers, such as birth certificates of your kids, their schools records, phone lists, bank records, realtor information etc should be in your possession at all times. Don’t leave these papers with the movers.
