How to Move House Yourself
Moving your possessions yourself is no doubt a strenuous task that needs a lot contemplation and time, but it can save you a great deal of money. Here are few tips and tricks that you can utilize to make the moving process smooth and simple.
Make an inventory of your possessions
The best way to move your house smoothly is to make an inventory of the things you have. Making a list of your possessions will help you determine the size and number of boxes as well as the kind of transport you will need for your move.
Interview prospective truck rental companies
Once you have determined the size of truck you will need to move your possessions, contact at least two to three reputed truck rental companies and ask what kind of services (packing, loading, moving, unloading etc) and coverage they offer. Also get rates for every service and make sure you thoroughly check the quality of the rental vehicles of each company.
Rent an appropriately sized vehicle
After comparing and contrasting the services and charges of the prospective truck rental companies, hire the services of one that better suits your budget and requirements. Keeping in mind your inventory, rent the appropriate size of the transportation vehicle (truck, trailer, van etc). Most companies assist their clients in choosing the vehicle size for free.
Inquire about the pick-up and drop-off points
While most rental vehicles pick-up the luggage from the existing home of the client and drop it off at their destination, there are some that have specific pick-up and drop-off points in an area. Discuss this with the rental vehicle’s owner before agreeing to a deal and try to set up a drop-off point as close to your destination as possible.
Make necessary travel arrangements
After finalizing a deal with the rental vehicle company, make necessary travel arrangements for yourself and for your family members. If the move is expected to take more than a day then it is better to make hotel reservations. If any of your family members is travelling separately, make sure he/she has the related addresses and contact details.
Rent appropriate moving aids
You will require moving aids to move heavier objects, such as furniture and appliances. Rent appropriate moving tools, and if you are a frequent mover, it is better to purchase such tools.
Sell or donate unwanted things
There may be a number of unwanted items in your belongings, such as the carrycot of your youngest daughter who is in school now. Sell or donate such items to reduce your load and make the shifting process much easier. If you have a lot of items to sell, you can hold a garage sale to make decent extra money.
Seek help of relatives to load and unload your luggage
Once you have properly packed your possessions and are ready to move out, ask your friends and family members to help you load the luggage at the old home and unload at your destination. You can treat them later with food or take them out for dinner, but they won’t charge you as much as professional movers might.
