How to Hire a Real Estate Lawyer

Hiring a real estate lawyer can benefit you in many ways. They know the law and have the experience which allows them to spot and resolve any issues that may arise from your real estate transaction. Your lawyer will also review all the terms of the arrangement and co-ordinate with the mortgage lender to ensure that every process is properly completed. Given how much rides on it, it is imperative that you find a capable lawyer who is easy to work with and protects your interests in every possible way.

Word of mouth

Your real estate agent will most likely suggest a real estate lawyer for you to consult. Since real estate agents often work with real estate lawyers, their recommendations can be useful. Moreover, you should contact friends and family members who may be able to suggest someone they have worked with in the past.

Visit local Bar Association

Your local bar association is where all local lawyers are registered. You can request a list of licensed lawyers who specialize in real estate and then conduct your own research before short listing a few. The list will not only give you the luxury of options but will also serve as a certification that all the mentioned lawyers are licensed and registered.

Check classifieds

A lot of lawyers also have their ads published in local newspapers. You should go through the classifieds to list all the lawyers who claim to have experience with real estate. The ads usually contain contact details and phone numbers which you can note down.

Arrange consultations

Initial consultations are very important, and are free of charge. Here the lawyer will assess your situation and help you understand how he/she will go about handling your case. This is your opportunity to ask questions and make your own assessment about the lawyer’s capability. You should also inquire about credentials, experience and fee rates, and find out whether the lawyer will be using the help of other lawyers to deal with your case. Take appointments from all the shortlisted lawyers and consider their experience in general (total time in the field) and in relation to cases such as yours.

Hire a lawyer

Once you have had initial consultations with all the shortlisted lawyers, select one who you find comfortable to work with and who is capable of representing your interests. Your choice will also depend on your requirements. If you need the lawyer for a small purchase agreement for instance, you shouldn’t be spending a fortune on his/her fees.
